In 2021, investment fraud accounted for nearly one third of losses, with the promise of high returns enticing potential victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK Finance\u2019s Annual Fraud Report notes that scammers are aware that pension freedoms have given over-55s access to huge sums. Additionally, you have a recipe for disaster when around 13m people are unable or unwilling to pay for financial advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average loss per victim for <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/fraud Archives - Insolvency &amp; Law (insolvencyandlaw.co.uk)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investment fraud<\/a><\/em><\/strong> last year was more than \u00a314,000. These scams typically originate from cold calls, but also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fake online ads promising high returns on fictitious investments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social media bombardment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letters through the post<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cloned websites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-opportunities-for-online-bank-fraud\">Opportunities for online bank fraud<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cO<em>pportunities<\/em>\u201d tend to be time restricted and victims are pressured to act swiftly or lose out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes victims are persuaded to put more money into a scam after they&#8217;ve seen an initial \u201c<em>return<\/em>\u201d on their investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps you are savvy. You may scoff at the prospect of becoming a victim. But <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/illitigation.co.uk\/winding-up-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">modern scammers<\/a><\/em><\/strong> are very sophisticated. They research their targets thoroughly using information gathered from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Data breaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social media (we already know how little protection our data has there)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-cautionary-tale\">Cautionary tale<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing this information as a cautionary tale is excellent. However, how can we address the problem effectively?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Shelford, the lead police commissioner for economic and cyber-crime, asserts that education is the most cost-effective means to combat fraud. Merely relying on warnings within banking apps is inadequate. Thus, a public awareness campaign is imperative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media, online shopping outlets, and search engines dominate the internet. They have a moral obligation to protect users and fortify defenses against fraud. Instead of enabling fraud and exposing users to vulnerabilities, they must prioritize user safety. Regrettably, that&#8217;s currently not the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Scam Alert<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This message serves as a warning against potential online scams, including <strong>website scams<\/strong> and <strong>investment scams<\/strong>.
